Entrepreneur expresses cultural pride through design

In 2019 visionary designer ,Siphelele Ntombela, founded African Renaissance Designs, a representation of cultural pride and innovative fashion inspired by his brother and deeply influenced by his mother's rich cultural heritage.

His business has grown from a passion project into a brand celebrated for its commitment to quality, cultural consciousness, and sustainability with its unique blend of African aesthetics and high-end fashion.

“Since I was a child, I have always had an appreciation for art, and drew cartoons in my books at primary school,” shares Siphelele. “Fast forward to today, I launched African Renaissance Design to bridge the gap between African tradition and contemporary fashion.”

Born in Ladysmith, KwaZulu Natal, Siphelele discovered his artistic flair at an early age, winning art competitions and later venturing into fashion during his gap year. His creative journey led him to study Textile Design at Nelson Mandela University, where he refined his craft and earned recognition, including a prestigious sponsorship from Mohair SA for his award-winning African Renaissance Designs Zulu Collection A/W 18.

The designs are crafted from luxurious mohair known for its durability and sheen, and reflect a palette inspired by natural landscapes and global trend forecasts. Since the launch of the collection, it has been showcased at renowned platforms such as Nelson Mandela Bay Fashion Week, SA Fashion Week, and Design Indaba. It has also received overwhelming praise from industry influencers, and earned several nominations at the Twyg Awards.

Collaborations with brands like Jockey SA have further solidified African Renaissance Designs status as a rising star in South African fashion.

“Entrepreneurship has taught me a lot and built my personal character,” says Siphelele. “When I started my business, I was unclear as to what I was doing. However, with the right support I have developed better business skills that have helped me improve my lifestyle and take care of my family.”

Following his participation in the SAB Foundation Tholoana Enterprise Awards Programme, where he received tailored mentorship and business skills development support, Siphelele’s business has grown. He has expanded his team and doubled its turnover, paving the way for his ambitious plans to establish his first retail store in Durban.

“One of the major challenges we have been facing as a business is accessing new markets,” he explains. “With the support of my dedicated mentor, Eugenie Drakes, I now understand product development that speaks to the market I want to attract, and this has helped me save time and make more profit.”

“When establishing and growing a small business, you need to have authenticity, passion, and a willingness to learn,” advises Siphelele. “These qualities are key to achieving success.
